Jolly Running Escot Half and Full Marathon
Two Honiton Running Club ladies decided to end the year by running the Escot Marathon which took place on Sunday, 22nd December alongside a weekend of running events organised by Jolly Running Series. After a week of torrential wind and rain the day was due to be dry! The course had to be adapted due to 2 fallen trees, so the race turned into 7 laps of the course to reach the full (if not slightly over marked) marathon distance. What lay ahead of Louise Bennett and Paula Ferris was to be a very tough, muddy, slippery, trail run with adverse terrain, pushing both the mental and physical limits. Even a water slide was included at the end of each lap! Paula and Lou ran together for 5 laps, Lou was strong on the hills and felt good (being sensible after slight hip issues earlier in training) so a team talk took place on route and reluctantly Lou went ahead and took the race head on. Finishing strongly (even if the last half a mile was through a horrendously boggy field at the front of Escot House) she gained an amazing 1st Marathon time of 5 hours 11 minutes. What a way to end the year; 25th overall, 3rd lady in her age category, 1st Honiton lady home and a waterslide on the last lap too. Paula (having tripped and fallen on lap 4!) was only 16 minutes behind finishing in a time of 5.27, 35th place and 4th lady in her age category. Paula declined the water slide as she feared that she would not be able to get up again! The race was won by Richard Pedrick of SWRR in a time of 3.36. There were 85 finishers and 14 competitors who did not finish!
Some other HRC ladies tackled the half marathon distance which also included 3.5 loops of mud, hills, puddles and a water slide. Pip Vanham, Vanessa Knowles, Olivia Killen, Michelle Selley and Anna Falwell had so much fun. They ran together and had a ‘jolly’ time. They crossed the line in 3:05.
Haldon Jingle & Wellington Monument 10k
Sunday, 15th December saw Honiton Running Club Junior Alfie Gibbins take part in the Haldon Jingle festive 5km race; a trail race with a big hill finisher! Alfie came 2nd overall (placing the same as he did last year) but with an impressive 3 minutes off of his time and completing the run in just 21 minutes 37 seconds. There were 93 finishers. Well done Alfie
Several HRC members took part in the Wellington Monument Bert King Memorial Race on Sunday, 22nd December. This is a 10k raced organised by Taunton AC. It starts in the middle of Hemyock village and finishes at the Primary School. It is a mainly road race with runners being taken up to Wellington Monument before turning around and following the same route back. The Monument is presently surrounded by scaffolding so runners could not circle the Monument but went around a cone or two; not quite the same! Steve Davey was the first runner back for HRC in a time of 49:25 coming in 92nd place. Next was Steve’s wife, Judy, who finished in 50:58 coming 110th and winning her age category. It was quite a family affair as next back for Honiton was their daughter, Jo Buxton, who finished 2 places and 21 seconds after her mum. Tim Wigram came 141st in 54:23 and he was followed by Martin Killick who came 149th in 55:10. Hannah Brown had started running with her sister but finished the race on her own to come 163rd in 57:03. Luke Holway ran with Emma Davey and they completed the HRC line-up delighted to finish just under the hour in 59:05 in 176th place. The race was won by Alexander Whittaker of Bristol and West AC in 36:21. There were 214 finishers.
Plym Trail Marathon and Half
A group of Honiton Running Club members went down to do the Plym Trail Half and Marathon in Clearbrook on the Dartmoor National Park just outside Plymouth. Both races are an out and back to Coypool along cycle way number 27. The marathon has 2 laps. It was perfect weather for running, a crisp clear morning with light drizzle to begin with. There were 49 marathon runners and Stephen Boyes finished 3 hour 54 minutes and 59 seconds and in 16th place. In the Half Marathon Jennie Sleeman over took Rachel Hennessey half a mile before the finish line and finished in 1.55.20 and in 16th place and Rachel finished 15 seconds later in 17th place. Next in was Olivia Killen completing her 24th half marathon in 1.57.50 in 18th place. Next in for Honiton RC was Philippa Vanham in 2.14.19 and 32nd place. Kathy Layzell finished the line-up of the ladies and completed it whilst injured in 3.10.25 and 41st place. There were 43 runners in the half.
Drogo 10
Last Sunday, Honiton Running Club members travelled to Castle Drogo to take part in the Drogo 10 which is an exciting and challenging 10 mile multi-terrain run with the base at Castle Drogo. There are two major hills including the infamous Hunters’ Path which is tough enough but especially when you have already run 8 miles. The race boasts plenty of climb but this does mean there are spectacular views of the Teign Valley and a lovely flattish section along the River Teign. The weather was dry but there was plenty of mud under foot. First back for HRC was first time Drogo runner Johnnie Bennett in the fantastic time of 1 hour 23 minutes gaining him 92nd place. First HRC lady was Ceri Oak who came 168th in 1:32. The next 3 back were very close with Jo Buxton finishing 204th in 1:34, her Dad, Steve Davey, 2 places and just 16 seconds later who was in turn followed just 12 seconds later by Paula Ferris. Judy Davey was next back coming 223rd in 1:36. Roger Saunders had been overtaken by Judy whilst he was doing up his shoe lace and he finished 249th in 1:38. Tim Wigram came 257th in 1:39 and Luke Holway’s aim was to finish under 1:40 but he missed out by 2 minutes coming in 282nd place. Rachel Hennessey came 304th in 1:45, Katy Lancaster 374th in 1:54 and completing the line-up, carrying Wile E. Coyote, the Club mascot, was Pip Vanham who came 432nd in 2:05. There were 502 finishers and the race was won by James Baker in 1:01.
Beyond Events New Forest Races
Last weekend, Honiton Running Club invaded the New Forest to take part in the Beyond Events series of races. There were plenty of options on offer from 5k, 10k, 10 miles through to Half Marathon. It was a Club outing for HRC with a coach taking them to a hotel close to the base for the races on Saturday. No-one from Honiton took on the 5k; all agreeing it was too far to travel to race that distance. The race began and finished at a camp site close to Brockenhurst and was run on good tracks through the New Forest so the scenery was spectacular and not too hilly. Race organisation left a little to be desired so the results reported need to be taken loosely! Several tackled the 10k and Steve Davey was first back for HRC and an incredible 5th overall with the race having been won by a lady, Alice Rudd in a time of 43 minutes 56 seconds. Steve took 48:57. Wendy Hawker was first HRC lady back for this distance coming 29th in 1:01:11. Liz Corney followed coming 40th in 1:05:23. Rachel Mandrupson came 48th in 1:08:43. Vanessa Glyn-Jones came 65th in 1:10:59. Asilah Jarald only decided to run about 15 minutes before the start and she took it easy, as she has been injured. She ran with a friend to come 98th in 1:29:42. There were 105 finishers. Next came the 10 miler racers with the race being won by Sam Davis in 1:02:54.First for HRC and a very impressive 4th place, undoubtedly winning his age category, was Howard Bidmead in a time of 1:21:07. Luke Holway came 5th in 1:24:11. Rebecca Stevens and Tim Pepper ran together coming 7th overall in 1:27:50 with Rebecca 1st HRC lady and 2nd lady overall. Sean Corbett came 11th in 1:36:21 and Andy Ashford was 14th in 1:39:29. Other Honiton runners in the 10 miler were 17th Steve Selley 1:43:18, 18th Vanessa Knowles 1:43:24, 25th Linda Pike 1:48:33, 27th Sue Jones 1:49:05. There were 45 finishers.
The final race was the Half Marathon and Jo Buxton led HRC home to come first lady overall in 1 hour 45 minutes having run with Richard Harvey to the 9 mile point. Richard finished in 1:49 winning his age category. Jo’s mum, Judy Davey, finished next as 3rd lady in 1:50 followed closely behind by Lou Bennett and Paula Ferris who had ran the race together. They crossed the line together just 40 seconds behind Judy. Hadleigh Davies followed and then Jennie Sleeman in 1:58. Rachel Hennessey finished next for HRC and Olivia Killen followed in 2:03. Next came Michelle Selley, Anna Dalzell and Richard Kemp who all ran and finished together. Mike Killen also finished the Half with minimal training and Kathy Layzell running with the Club mascot, Wile E Coyote, completed the Honiton line-up. Several Honiton spectators supported the Club and a great weekend was had by all thanks to the Chairman, Howard Bidmead.
Herepath Half, Dark Valley Half Marathon, Dukes Sidmouth 10K, Bideford 10, Templar 10
On Sunday, 27th October, Tim Wigram and Olivia Killen of Honiton Running Club ran the Herepath Half in Somerset; a challenging trail half marathon in the Blackdown Hills. They had a warm, sunny glorious autumn morning and after all the rain there was plenty of mud. Christian Green won the race in a new course record in 1 hour 28 minutes. Tim ran 2:10:37 and 68th place and Olivia ran 2:20:52 and 101st place. There were 157 finishers who all received a lovely tumbler.
On Saturday night, 2nd November, Olivia Killen was out again to take part in the Dark Valley Half Marathon. This was the first time Olivia had raced at night. She wore a headtorch and finished in 2 hours 11 minutes. The race’s base was at Moors Valley Country Park, Ringwood.
Last Sunday, several HRC members ran the inaugural Dukes Sidmouth 10k in bright sunshine. The race was organised by LM Events and was a great course, mainly flat with a couple of nasty hills although not well marked in one or two places. Unfortunately, Pippa Westall went the wrong way in the last mile and let Paula Ferris get in front of her, meaning Paula was first back for the club! Martin Killick finished in 55:30 and Tracey-Lee Hailey in 1:23:10. Other HRC runners were Dawn Peek and Vanessa Glyn-Jones. The route was out and back taking runners from Sidford through the Byes, a loop towards Salcombe and then along Sidmouth seafront.
On the same day 3 members took part in the Bideford 10 miler. This road race takes in some magnificent views of the Taw and Torridge estuary and returns on the flat Tarka Trail. Adam Rooke enjoyed the run and was delighted with his time coming 77th in 1 hour 7 minutes. Pip Vanham came 572nd in 1:38 and Wendy Hawker finished the HRC line-up to come 704th in 1:47. There were 832 finishers and the winner was Tom Merson, of Exmouth Harriers, in the amazing time of 50 minutes 42 seconds.
It was a busy day as some HRC runners took part in Teignbridge Trotters Running Club’s Sibelco Templar 10. This is a multi-terrain starting and finishing at Stover School, Newton Abbot. Runners run through the picturesque Stover Country Park as well as the fields at Teigngrace. This year due to the flooding, the route was shortened to 8 miles. Liam Dingle was first back for HRC coming 44th just missing out finishing under the hour by 32 seconds. Hannah Brown and Sharon Wells finished virtually together with Hannah coming 126th in 1:13:11 and Sharon just one place and 4 seconds later. The race was won by Lee Turner in 48:59. There were 268 finishers.
Exmoor Stagger and Stumble
Last Sunday saw Honiton Running Club runners tackling the tough mainly off road Exmoor Stagger. This boasts 16 miles of stunning scenery including a climb up to the highest point in Somerset, Dunkery Beacon. The run includes 3600 ft of assent. The weather was perfect but it was very muddy underfoot due to the recent rain. With no mist the views were breath taking. The first runner back for HRC was Jo Buxton who came 88th in 2 hours 46 minutes knocking 8 minutes of her run from last year. Jo’s dad, Steve Davey, was next coming 102nd in 2:49 and completing the line-up for this family affair was Jo’s mum, Judy Davey, who came 116th in 2:53. There were 225 finishers and the winner was James Baker in 1:50. Emma Davey and Luke Holman took on the baby sister of the Stagger in the form of the 6 ½ mile Stumble. This in itself is a tough run with plenty of climb and they did really well running together finishing 48th in 1:05. There were 86 runners.
Studland Stampede and Burton Bradstock Half Marathon
Last Sunday, despite the continuous rain all weekend, Honiton Running Club once again gave good support to the challenging 7.5 mile race from Studland Bay in Dorset. This popular race has a variety of surfaces to run on from heathland tracks to soft sand dunes and a final mile and a half long run along the beach. This year the tide was in so the beach disappeared at one point guaranteeing wet feet but as it was still raining it didn’t seem to matter. The race was won by Philip Mosley in a time 47:14 and First Lady was Caroline Stanzel in a time of 54:04. Howard Bidmead led the Honiton runners home in 68th place and a very good time of 62:11 mins which he was very pleased with. Roger Saunders came in next at 101st in a time of 65:24 a minute slower than last year but the going was tougher. Tom Bornet was one place behind him in 102nd at 65:28 mins. Sharon Wells was getting her Portuguese suntan washed off to finish just in front of Mark Newson as 139/140th finishers in a time of 69:29 mins. Nick and Sandra Thorpe travelled down from Midhurst to join their old running club for a race and Nick was 181st in 72:34 and Sandra 325th in 89:15 mins. Lynn Grady put in a very good run to finish 194th at 73:28 mins. Janice Newson who had just got a place the night before came in 236th in 76:51. Steve and Michelle Selley, who had not run for some time, both came in together in 236/238 position in 77:56 a tough way to get back to running. Finally the veteran Honiton runner Dennis Costello came in 315th in 87:28 mins which was an excellent time. The goody bags are always worth having for this race.
Meanwhile, on the same day, Olivia Higginson ran the Burton Bradstock half this morning in 2 hours 6 minutes over this undulating route with a short sharp uphill finish to the village hall. The weather wasn't as bad as forecast with only a few patches of drizzle although it was very wet underfoot due to the surface water on the roads. Runners were rewarded with a reusable coffee cup and medal.
Killerton 10k and Cheltenham Half Marathon
Sunday, 22nd September was the Relish Running Race Series held in the National Trust grounds of Killerton House and Gardens. A popular event hosting 1km, 5km 10km and half marathon distances together with a canicross event (running with your dog on a lead). The terrain was off road through the tracks and woods with climbs and descents often quite slippery and very challenging in parts due to the very heavy rain which greeted runners whilst preparing to start. Due to the popularity of the event and often single track parts of the course there was a wave system in place; staggered starts to allow all runners to be spread around the course. Three ladies from Honiton Running Club lined up for the 10km event, and all finishing within 3 minutes of each other. Pippa Westall was first back for Honiton in a time of 55 minutes 47 seconds, a place of 48th winning 1st lady in her age category, thoroughly pleased with her run. Louise Bennett had a great run beating last year’s time by 4 minutes, feeling strong on the hills finishing in 58.12, 61st place. Paula Ferris ran well and loved the course, pleased with 3rd in her age category with a time of 58.54, 65th position overall. There was a total of 250 runners with the winner of the event Hamish Runram in 41.51. The race was well organised, marked and marshalled with excellent refreshments at the finish.
Last Sunday, Judy and Steve Davey took the opportunity of running the Cheltenham Half Marathon whilst visiting their daughter. Steve finished 2 minutes before Judy in 1 hour 45 having had a great run. Judy’s run managed to give her a 3rd in age category finish. The race is almost as flat as you could get with its base at Cheltenham Racecourse. Runners went out and looped around the town a few times before running around the Racecourse for the last 2 ½ miles. Not as tough as it sounds as it wasn’t on the racetrack with jumps but on tarmac although runners did cross the racetrack a few times and after heavy rain the night before, these sections were tough and slippery. The race was won by Dominic James in 1:10 and there were just under 2500 runners.
Great Somerset Memory Walk & Idesleigh Warhorse 10k
Honiton Running Club’s Kathy Layzell and Michelle Selley ran most of the Great Somerset Memory Walk on 15th September raising money for St Margaret’s Hospice. The weather was lovely and the route took them along from Butlins, Minehead along the stunning West Somerset Coastal Path for 25 miles to Steart Marshes near Bridgwater. Kathy and Michelle found it beautiful but exhausting and went through paths, beach, rocks, seaweed and a nuclear power station! There were lots of accompanying walkers; all doing it in memory of someone. Kathy and Michelle were remembering their work colleague who died this year.
On Sunday, 22nd September, HRC member Aron Howells took part in the Idesleigh Warhorse 10k (actually 10.6k) on Dartmoor, which had some pretty awful hills but worth it for the views. Aron was delighted to finish in the top 10% coming 21st out of 212 runners with a time of 51 minutes 21 seconds.
Bridgwater 10k, Michelmores 5k, Dartmoor Trail Running Challenge and Stockland Scamper
On Sunday, 1st September, on a very slightly undulating course and a very warm day, both Liam Dingle and Adam Rooke of Honiton Running Club took on the out and back, Bridgwater 10k. The open road course is very exposed so finding some shade was very difficult indeed. The way out was nice and steady with Liam and Adam trading places on a couple of occasions. Hitting the turn point equalled hitting the head wind with Liam managing to power through and come home first for HRC, amongst a field of 206, in 13th place in a time of 40 minutes exactly, closely followed by Adam in 19th place in a time of 41:14.
A cool Thursday evening on 5th September was almost perfect for a city centre race filled with lots of twists and turns!! Liam and Adam were at it again, trading places on a number of occasions with Adam coming home as victor this time and first for HRC, across a field of 831, in 28th in a time of 19:37, closely followed by Liam in 30th in 19:42. Aron Howells put in a good show coming 83rd in 21:24. Hannah Brown finished with a solid run in 238th place and 24:48 and Katy Lancaster completed the HRC line-up to finish 233rd in 24:40.
On Saturday, 15th September, HRC’s Rebecca Stevens ran the Dartmoor Trail Running Challenge Half Marathon which turned out to be 14.5 miles and finished in 2 hours 45 minutes. Howard Bidmead ran the 7 miler which turned out to be 8.5 miles due mainly to someone having a picnic in front of a direction arrow which made several of the runners go the wrong way. Howard finished in 1:38. Notwithstanding that, Adam the organiser is well known for his distances to be only approximate and they are always more than the stated distance. However the weather was glorious, the views outstanding and the terrain tough as is only to be expected on Dartmoor.
On the following day HRC members were out in force again taking part in the Stockland Scamper 10k multi-terrain race. Making his debut as a HRC member and wearing his vest for the first time, Johnnie Bennett had a fantastic run coming first back for the club in 8th place in 49:38. Jo Buxton, having gone slightly wrong, was first HRC lady back and 3rd lady overall. She had to battle with her mum, Judy Davey, as although Jo had led throughout the race, once she took the wrong turn, she ended up behind Judy. However, she managed to outsprint her on the line meaning that Jo came 14th in 54:30 and Judy one place and 5 seconds later. Louise Bennett had followed Judy very closely for the entire race and this was how it remained with Lou coming 18th in 54:50. Pippa Westall finished 22nd in 56:07 followed by Steve Davey who came 25th in 57:13. Tim Wigram came 26th in 57:21 and Paula Ferris, who had taken it easy, finished the line-up to come 29th in 17 seconds over the hour. Tim Lenton of Axe Valley Runners won the race in 42:37 and there were 37 finishers.
Young HRC members Harry and Ben Entwistle took part in the associated 3k fun run with Harry coming 42nd in 18:40 and Ben 66th in 22:23. Seth Whitehouse also took part coming in just behind Ben in 22:25. There were 89 finishers and the race was won by Jake Johnson in 11:56. Thanks to Emma Parris, the main organiser, and everyone else who made the event so successful.
Dartmoor in a Day, City to Sea Marathon, Maverick Somerset Race, Great North Run & Crafty Fox Half
Last Saturday 3 Honiton Running Club members took part in Dartmoor in a Day Ultra Marathon. This is a challenging event going from Okehampton right the way across Dartmoor to Ivybridge. Participants can walk or run taking part in either the 50k event or the 30k distance. The event is organised by Climb South West and for the first time the route was fully marked. There are no marshals as such but runners (and walkers) are well looked after by event staff with two feed stations along the way. Judy Davey, Jo Buxton and Tim Wigram decided to run it together. This was Jo’s first event using her married name and also her first ultra. Unfortunately Tim had to pull out at 18 miles but he had completed most of the run by then. Judy and Jo continued together to finish in 6 hours 39 minutes. There are no times or results as such but they finished well up the field.
On the same day, Luke Holway took part in the City to Sea Marathon which starts at Exeter Riverside and goes to Babbacombe Downs, Torquay. Runners were treated to free fish and chips at the finish and Luke was relieved when he finished with a running time of 5 hours 10 minutes.
Also on Saturday, Adam Hennessey and his sister Rachel, took part in the Maverick Somerset Race. There was a choice of 3 distances on offer and they both chose to go ‘long’ at 21k. The race starts and finishes at Bath Racecourse and passes through the beautiful Cotswolds although free beer at the finish topped the views! Adam finished 13th in 2:07 and Rachel 75th in 2:56. The race was won by Kurt Taylor in 1:47 and there were 113 finishers.
On Sunday, 8th September, some HRC members took a much longer trip to take part in the Great North Run Half Marathon. There was a record entry of 57,000 runners and the race was won by Mo Farah. Sometime later and first back for HRC was Mike Mears who finished in 1:41. Other HRC runners were: Anna Dalzell 2:05, Karen Lister 2:08, Mandy Ward 2:18, Vanessa Knowles 2:19 and Deborah Vinnicombe 2:20.
On the same day Olivia Higginson and Michelle Selley took part in the Crafty Fox Half Marathon. The base is Ansty in Dorset. Olivia came 137th in 2:55 and Michelle finished 242nd in 3:37. There were 321 finishers and the race was won by Jack Oates in 1:36.
Seaton Park Run - Honiton Takeover
Honiton Running Club took over Seaton Parkrun last Saturday as most of the usual organisers were on a break. Howard Bidmead took charge enjoying the opportunity to get hold of the megaphone! Several of the club marshalled or took on timing duties but others did manage to run. The winning two ladies weren’t recorded as they had no barcode but the 3rd lady was Alison Hirst finishing in 20 minutes 35 seconds. This was her first time of running Seaton Parkrun. HRC’s own Jo Davey came 4th lady in 31st place and timed at 21:53. Simon Dimmock of Axe Valley Runners won the race in 18:09, Simon Bayliss was 2nd in 18:32 and Ian Berry-Bowers came in 3rd in 18:39. Adam Hennessey was 1st back for HRC coming 6th in 19:07 followed by Adam Rooke in 11th place in 19:44. Judy Davey came in 6th lady in 52nd place in 23:31 coming 2nd overall in age grading. Hannah Brown came 96th in 26:03. Alan Nicholls moved to Wales several years ago but is on holiday in the region and he came 178th in 30:04. Claire Arscott finished 231st in 32:56 and Vanessa Glyn-Jones came 236th in 33:30. The entire Ferris family turned up with Mum, Paula, running with Finlay to come 179th in 30:07. Dad, Adam, ran with Oliver finishing 260th in 36:13. Pip Vanham completed HRC’s line-up as tail runner running with the Club’s mascot, Wile E Coyote. It was an amazing atmosphere in perfect weather with 301 finishers and many holiday makers taking part.
Jurassic Coast 10k
Last Saturday, 4 Honiton Running Club members took part in the Jurassic Coast 10k multi-terrain run. The run has the base at Budleigh Salterton and runners are taken along public footpaths, quiet country lanes and the undulating coast path. It is one of the most scenic 10ks around and all money raised goes to FORCE Cancer Charity. The race was won by Dave Grima in 37 minutes 37 seconds. Joint first in for HRC were Rachel Hennessey and Luke Holway who ran together with Wile E. Coyote, the club mascot. They finished 158th in 57:36. Debbie Vinnicombe finished next for HRC coming 243rd in 1:07:38 and Vanessa Knowles completed the line-up coming 264th in 1:09:20. There were 324 finishers.
Dalwood Fayre 10k
Last Sunday, 6 Honiton Running Club members took a short drive to Dalwood to take part in the Dalwood Fayre 10k. This is a very low key event with the base in the beautiful village. The start is brutal with runners going back up the road they came down to get into the village for almost a mile. It then undulates with about ½ of the race on road and the rest either fields, woods or paths. The best part is the ½ mile finish at the end which allows runners to open up their stride for a lovely downhill stretch. Hadleigh Davies was first back for HRC finishing 12th in 54 minutes 8 seconds. Judy Davey and Hadleigh swapped places many times and Judy eventually finished one place and 15 seconds later coming 3rd lady. Lou Bennett was directly behind Judy finishing in 54:43 having carried the club mascot, Wile E., for the ride. Paula Ferris finished 16th in 55:36 and Pippa Westall finished 20th in 56:10. Emma Davey completed the HRC line-up to come 30th in 1:06:52. There were 37 finishers. Thanks to the Dalwood Run Committee for a great event.
Yeovilton 5k series, Ottery Rail & River 10k, Killerton Park Run and Blackdown Beauty
On Wednesday, 10th July, 5 Honiton Running Club members had a go at the 4th the summer Yeovilton 5k Series. First back for HRC was Adam Rooke who finished 22nd in 19 minutes 33 seconds. A fantastic result but still over 4 minutes behind Aaron Richond who won it in the almost unbelievable time of 15:18! Next back for HRC was Jay Sweetman who was 61st in 21:29. Jo Davey finished 2 places and 11 seconds later. Richard Harvey has had better runs and was disappointed to finish 71st in 22:20. Wendy Williams completed HRC’s line-up coming 124th in 26:09. There were 155 finishers.
On Saturday, 13th July, a day when the weather conditions for running were near perfect, 3 Honiton Ladies took on the local very well organised "Otter Rail and River 10km race". A scenic off-road event starting and finishing on the village playing field in Tipton St John, following public footpaths and rights of way. The mostly flat route heads downstream alongside the River Otter, through Harpford Woods, along the old Sidmouth railway line, back towards Tipton, through fields out to Fluxton and along tracks to the village. The children's 1 mile fun run started the morning at 10am, prior to the main race at 11am. Paula Ferris of "Positive EnerJe Health & Fitness" was asked to lead the warm up on both events before taking on the main event itself. First back for HRC was Paula in a time of 47:23. 42nd place, 5th lady and 1st in her age category. (Must have been that great warm up!) Lorna Jarrald had an excellent run despite a trip and fall at a water crossing finishing with a personal best time of 57:38 in 119th place. Kate Harding ran well giving all her efforts as she crossed the line in 1.03.10 and 159th. There were 258 runners in total with 1st place going to Sam Hopton of South West Road Runners in a time of 35.06. Harry Entwistle aged 5, was on top form proudly wearing his HRClub vest, as he tackled the 1 mile Fun Run achieving an amazing 20th place, 4th in his age category in a time of 8:50. Well done Harry and HRC Ladies.
Club Mascot, Wile E. Coyote has been out and again last weekend. On Saturday morning, he joined Rachel Hennessey, and a few other HRC runners, for Rachel’s 100th Park Run. Rachel finished in 27:03; well done Rachel, massive achievement! Wile E. then went Culm Head to take part in HRC organised Blackdown Beauty social run which attracted about 70 participants. Runners were invited to dress with Brexit as a theme and there were a few prominent politicians putting on their running shoes and even Boris managed to put in an appearance despite his busy schedule! Thanks to Jim Hill who provided his farm as a base. Runners have the option of several routes varying from 10.3 miles to the longest option of 18.2 miles (unless you get lost then it could be longer)! There are 3 optional pub stops along the way but a mandatory cream tea stop at Pear Tree Cottage, Stapley where the WI ladies had been working hard baking delicious home-made scones. All money raised went to Macmillan Cancer Support and this year everyone returned safely with not too many accidental route deviations!
Ham to Lyme and Charmouth Challenge
Honiton Running Club’s Olivia Higginson, Luke Holway, Claire Rouse and Rachel Hennessey all ran the Ham to Lyme Ultra Marathon together in blistering heat last Saturday. They took just under 8 hours to run the 31 miles which took them from Ham Hill at Stoke Sub Hamdon along a multi-terrain route with some spectacular views all the way to Lyme Regis. This was the first ultra for all 4 of them and they encouraged each other through the hard times. Once in Lyme Regis they took a dip in the sea to cool themselves down. The club mascot Wile E Coyote also accompanied them taking the time to pose for several photos along the way. HRC’s Becky Tydd also tackled this very tough challenge and was very pleased when she finished.
On the same day, 6 members took on the Charmouth Challenge on one of the hottest days of the year so far. This is a registered Fell race 8 miles in length and takes the runners from Charmouth, up the infamous Stonebarrow Lane to the cliffs above where runners are greeted with the most fabulous views. From here, the long climb is made to the top of Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast before descending back down to Charmouth along the coast path and the finish.
Suzanne Spiller, returning from injury had a fabulous run being the first Honiton runner back in a time of 1.10.32, finishing as 3rd female and 36th overall. Next back for Honiton was Hadleigh Davies finishing in 1.16.05 and in 66th place. Mark Dallyn was next in 1.18.15 in 86th position and followed by Louise Bennett who had a brilliant run and had no problem negotiating the hills, finishing in a time of 1.19.08 and finishing in 94th place. Paula Ferris was next in 108th place in 1.20.40. Finally Howard Bidmead finished in 1.22.48 and was in 126th position. There were 343 finishers and the race was won by James Baker from Chichester runners in a time of 52.17.
Also, Honiton juniors took part in the junior race, two miles long but again takes the runners up Stonebarrow lane before cutting back to the coast path and the final run back into Charmouth.
Max Spiller was 8th back overall and was first in the 10 to 11 age group finishing in 13.54. He was followed home by Josie Wiley who finished 20th overall and was 2nd female in the 10 to 11 age group. Harry Entwhistle was next in a time of 17.26, in 38th place, a truly amazing run as Harry is only 5 years old. Finally Ella Spiller completed the juniors finishing in 43rd position in a time of 17.38.
There were 159 runners and the race was won by George Chapman in 11.37.
Forde Abbey 10k and Umborne Ug
On Wednesday, 26th June some Honiton Running Club members took part in the Forde Abbey 10k off road race around the grounds of the Abbey. HRC’s Nick Silkstone came a spectacular 4th overall in 42 minutes 53 seconds winning his category as 1st senior male. Sharon Wells came 84th in 56:19 and Lorna Jarrald came 190th in 1:08:27. Lorna’s sister, Asilah, came 266th in 1:21:14. Clare Melbourne completed the line-up to come 284th in 1:29:59. The race was won by Chet Gillespie in 39:23 and there were 292 finishers.
Honiton Running Club is set to celebrate 20 years later this year and the original mascot has come out of hiding and will be appearing at local races as well as the more far flung unusual ones. The first outing for Wile E. Coyote was the Park Run at Seaton last Saturday. Jo Davey carried him during the run showing him Seaton’s beach on a very hot day. Jo and Wile E. managed to finish as 2nd lady in 22 minutes 11 seconds.
Wile E.’s next outing was the same day and also very local as he was taken to the Umborne Ug which is a 10k very hilly multi-terrain route with the base at Umborne Village Hall. His role was as supporter helping Howard Bidmead on the PA system. It was hot and sticky but conditions underfoot were dry. The race was won by Chet Gillespie (again) of Axe Valley Runners in 41:49. Ben Stone was first back for HRC coming 13th in 49:54 and Hadleigh Davies followed having arrived at the start just 1 minute before the off! He finished 20th in 55:17. Steve and Judy Davey swapped places countless times during the run but Steve finished next coming 26th in 57:04 with Judy 4 places and 36 seconds later with Judy winning her age category. Just 2 places behind and achieving a 5 minute pb for this race was Sharon Wells who finished in 58:20 also winning her category. Pippa Westall finished 36th in 59:47. Luke Holway didn’t want to push himself too much as he is running an ultra-marathon next week but he didn’t realise how hilly this race is. He finished 38th in 1:00:08. Rebecca Stevens finished 48th in 1:04:27 and Darren Roberts completed HRC’s line-up to come 53rd in 1:06:15. There were 90 finishers. There were also some HRC juniors taking part in the associated fun run which was won by George Charman of Axe Valley Runners in 10:22. HRC’s Harri Stone came 13th in 14:02 and Emily Pepper came 19th in 16:10. Harry Entwistle came 21st in 16:26 and 3 year old Gabriella Pepper came 31st in 20:07. There were 37 finishers. Thanks to Eleanor and Rick Wood, the main organisers of the race, as well as all the marshals and landowners.
Heron Half, Cheddar Gorge Marathon, Woodland Relays and Torbay Half Marathon
On 9th June, Honiton Running Club’s Simon Bates took part in the Heron Half at Yeovilton and Simon finished in 2 hours 2minutes and 35 seconds. This was Simon’s first ever half marathon and hopefully not his last!
On 16th June, Stephen Boyes took part in the Cheddar Gorge Marathon. He found it his toughest marathon so far which is saying something as he has completed well over 100! The route was changed to four laps instead of two on the day due to danger of falling off the cliff and the start was delayed due to clay shoot on course! The race ascended by 2700 ft and Stephen took 5 hours 5 minutes coming 15th overall and winning his age category.
On the same day relatively new member Adam Rooke took part in the Age UK Exeter 10K Superhero Run. He finished in 41:13 and 12th position overall which was 3rd in his popular age category. Those taking part were invited to dress up as a superhero and many did!
On Wednesday evening, 19th June, HRC managed 12 teams of 3 at Axe Valley Runners’ Woodland Relays held at Morganhayes. The course had been shortened to 1.3 miles due to fallen trees and Honiton runners did very well taking home several prizes. First team back overall and taking the mixed prize was HRC’s team of Jasmine Stone, Mark Jeffreys and Nick Silkstone finishing in 23 minutes 15.The next HRC prize winners were the men’s vets made up of Roger Saunders, Rod Inglis and Howard Bidmead. They finished in 28:25. The ladies’ vets’ team also won finishing in 30:17 made up of Pippa Westall, Judy Davey and Fran Bond.
There were some other superb performances by HRC runners and the full results for HRC are:

Honiton Running Club’s Olivia Higginson took part in the Torbay Half Marathon on Sunday, 23rd June. It was a humid day with no sun. The race consists of 2 laps from Paignton Green to Torquay with a few hills along the way. Olivia completed in 1:54:15 and 563rd position out of 1409.Olivia enjoyed a paddle in the sea after the event which was won by Tom Merson of Exmouth Harriers in 67:11.
Jersey Half Marathon
Last Sunday, Over 500 runners started this year’s Jersey half marathon last Sunday with Honiton Running Club member Howard Bidmead being one of them. This was Howard’s third Jersey half marathon and one of his favourites. Despite the 09.15am start the sun was shining making conditions very warm. The race starts in St. Ouens village and heads two miles out to the infamous 5 mile coast road along St. Ouens Bay. This is one long road which culminates in a massive climb at Corbiere. From here the route is shaded along the old railway line which brings the runners into St. Aubin’s Bay and the final 3 miles along the coastal walk into St. Helier and the finish. Howard had a good run and passed several runners who had succumbed to the heat. The final 3 miles along the sea front was however extremely hard and Howard has described being able to see the finish but it never seemed to get any closer. 502 runners finished the race and Howard was 141st in a time of 1.45.27 and was 5th out of 15 in the O60 category. The race was run by Phil Taylor in 1.15.13.
HRC Junior Woodland Relay
On Tuesday 4th HRC Juniors held their 2nd Juniors’ woodland relay at Escot Park.
The juniors ran in teams of 3 with 10 teams from HRC and 6 teams from West Hill School.
These were divided into two age groups; Under 11 & Under 16 with the U11 doing a 1 mile route through Escot woods and the U16 following a 1.3 mile route with a slight detour around a field before joining the same route as the U11s. With well-marked routes and marshals to point them in the right direction all juniors make it around safely. The weather was kinder this year and it only started to rain whilst packing up but by this time most of the cakes had been eaten so nothing was spoilt.
The fastest individuals were:
U11 girl - Amber McDermott of HRC in a time of 6 min 54 sec.
U11 boy - Sam Smart of West Hill in 6 min 26 secl
U16 girl - Piper Leisk on HRC in 9 min 56 sec

Mont Saint-Michel Marathon, Women Can Marathon & Half Marathon, Dorset Invader (Long) Marathon and Edinburgh Marathon
It was definitely a weekend of marathons for Honiton Running Club members on Sunday, 26th May. Firstly, Rebecca Stevens and Tim Pepper took part in the Mont Saint-Michel Marathon in France. It was Tim’s first ever marathon and he did really well to finish in 4 hours 9 minutes although his target was a sub 4 hour as that is what his brother has achieved when he took on the distance; there’s always next time! Rebecca finished in 4:32 and was struggling towards the end but was accompanied by her 2 daughters for the final run in which helped tremendously. It was a beautiful course and very well organised. Everyone was very friendly and helpful, and there was a lot of support out on the course from spectators too.
The 3rd year, and probably the last, of the Women Can and Half Marathon saw a different format with all events starting at 9am but the Half beginning at Tipton and the whole in Sidmouth. There was also a 10k starting at Budleigh Salterton. This meant there was a steady stream of finishers at Sidmouth Rugby Club throughout the day. Jo Davey had an amazing run to finish 3rd in 4:14 and her mum finished behind her, albeit by 8 minutes, to come 4th! Both were surprised and amazed at the result. Paula Ferris was struggling with her contact lenses but nevertheless she was pleased to finish in 4:46 completing HRC’s team for the Marathon. Clare Melbourne, Mandy Ward and Pip Vanham all took on the half marathon distance and Mandy was left feeling a little frustrated with a pain in her leg slowing her down. She finished in 2:32. Pip finished in 2:37 and Clare finished in 2:52 just happy to finish after being ill last week. It was another extremely well organised race with runners being treated to a delicious cream tea after all events.
Claire Rouse and Rachel Hennessy took on the hilly and challenging Dorset Invader (Long) Marathon, covering 28 mile with an elevation of 4287ft. Competitors were treated to outstanding views from Pilsdon Pen and Dorset’s highest point Lewesdon Hill. Claire and Rachel ran together completing the course in 7:17:32.
Kevin and Wendy Hawker travelled to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh marathon. Kevin had trained towards a sub 2:50 time and didn’t miss out by too much to finish in 2:55 and still very pleased with the result. Things didn’t go according to plan for Wendy either but she finished in 4:43 which is a massive pb by 11 minutes over the distance so she wasn’t too disheartened.
Bideford 10k, Run Exe Relays, Clyst Hydon Huff & Exeter Half Marathon
On 12th May, Kevin Hawker ran the Bideford 10k coming 12th place out of 1300 runners in 35:54 winning his age category.
Friday evening of 17th May saw 4 teams from Honiton at the Run Exe Relays in Exeter; teams of 4 running 4km each. There were some great performances on the night. First team home for Honiton was the men’s team in 20th place with Adam Rooke, Mark Jeffreys, Alasdair Moffett and Adam Hennessey. Next team in 39th place was Honiton Mixed Team 1 with Jay Sweetman, Jo Davey, Richard Harvey and Liam Dingle. Third team back was Honiton Mixed Team 2 in 68th position with Sharon Wells, Sean Corbett, David Hawker and Roger Saunders. The Honiton Ladies’ team placed 78th with Rachel Hennessey, Pip Vanham, Lorna Jarald and Claire Rouse. A great team event and one Honiton will look forward to next year.
HRC had a great turnout at the Clyst Hydon Huff last Sunday. Now in its 4th year this is a 10k run mainly around the lanes local to Clyst Hydon but also taking in a couple of loops around Ashclyst Forest which is always muddy and it didn’t disappoint for Sunday’s race. The race was won by Mark Jeffreys in 42:01 and the first HRC runner home was Mike Mears in 6th place in 45:39. Adam Rooke followed to come 14th in 48:23. Jo Davey was first back for Honiton ladies coming 3rd lady overall in 23rd place with a time of 51:40. She was delighted to take home her first ever trophy! Sean Monger followed coming 25th in 52:01 with Jay Sweetman just one place and 10 seconds later. Howard Bidmead had a great run to come just 2 places after Jay in 53:20. Steve Davey came 34th in 54:47 with his wife, Judy, hot on his heels coming 37th in 55:23 and winning her age category. Roger Saunders came 40th in 55:42, Daniella Monger 73rd in 63:47, Mandy Ward 75th in 65:09, Kate Harding 78th in 65:43, Pip Vanham 93rd in 69:21 and Catherine Monger 110th in 72:52. There were 140 finishers.
On the same day, Olivia Higginson and Luke Holway took part in the Exeter Half Marathon. It is a great flat route along Exeter Quay to St David’s and back to Marsh Barton and the Quay to finish. It was hot and humid in places but Luke and Olivia did extremely well with Luke finishing in just over 1 hour 50 minutes which is a pb and Olivia did 1:54. They were rewarded with a colourful medal of the Cathedral and a great t-shirt.
Ottery 10k, Beer Blazer & Belfast City Marathon
Honiton Running Club held its Ottery 10k last Sunday in beautiful sunshine but a bit hot for the runners. First to cross the line was Sam Hopton in the fantastic time of 34 minutes 9 seconds. Second was Toby Garrick in 35:04 and he was followed by Miko Cadeddu in 35:21. The lady winner was Amy Jones in 40:37 coming 26th overall, second was Chloe Fox in 42:09 and 38th place and third lady was Jo Pearce in 43:42 and 52nd overall. Five of those 6 were South West Road Runners so well done to them. Toby was running for Sidmouth RC. New HRC member Adam Rooke was first back for Honiton coming 40th in 42:14. Ceri Oak was 1st lady back for HRC winning her age category. She came 59th overall in 44:38. Jay Sweetman didn’t quite manage to finish under 45 minutes by 2 seconds but he was delighted nevertheless coming 61st. Hadleigh Davies only decided to take part a few minutes before the race start and he did well to come 68th in 46:13. Not far behind was 2nd HRC lady, Paula Ferris, who came 70th in 46:20 with London Marathon training still helping her good form. Louise Bennett is another new HRC member and relatively new runner altogether. She had a fine run finishing 80th in 46:55.
Other HRC finishers: 64th Vernon Gillard 45:26, 77th Sam Pollard 46:35, 92nd Pippa Westall 48:38, 121st Richard Kemp 51:37, 128th Daniella Monger 52:25, 130th Sean Corbett 52:41, 140th Tracey Perry 53:26, 148th Emma Davey 54:09, 152nd Martin Killick 54:19, 169th Simon Bates 55:13, 174th Esme Moffett 56:09, 178th Kate Harding 56:23, 245th Catherine Monger 1:02:15, 248th Lucy Daly 1:02:24 and 325th Tina Ludlow 1:13:06.
There was also a mile fun run around the cricket ground and on the old railway line. The first 3 boys were Noah Thomas, Max Spiller (HRC) and Oscar Ganley. The girl top 3 finishers were Jemima Daly (HRC), Maisie Bennett (HRC) and Saskia Van Rensburg.
Thanks to everyone who made the event the success it was with a record number of entries recorded of 335. Credit must go especially to HRC’s Roger Saunders; Race Director, main organiser and co-ordinator.
Meanwhile, 3 HRC members went to Pecorama in Beer to take part in the Beer Blazer which was over 10 miles for the first time this year. There was also a 5k race on offer. It was sunny with a cooling breeze for the race which had 136 finishers in the 10 mile event and 73 in the 5k.
The going was dry with only one river crossing at 10miles. The course had mile markers and the last mile seemed very long! Rod Inglis came in 19th in 1:29:11 taking the prize for first in M60 cat. Kelvin Peard was 46th in 1:44:35. and Simon Gilbert was 19th in the 5k in 29:15. The prize came as a complete surprise for Rod who was sure that several of the South West Roadrunners had beaten him to it.
On 5th May, Rachel Hennessey ran the Belfast City Marathon which was being held on Sunday for the first time with a new faster and flatter route. There was an issue with an extra 0.3 miles being added but it was a great run with great crowd support. Rachel ran in 4 hours 13 minutes which is a marathon PB by about half an hour!
East Devon Round & Chardstock Run
Honiton Running Club’s Adam Hennessey took part in the inaugural running of the East Devon Round Ultra-marathon on Saturday, 4th May. This race was HRC’s Alasdair Moffett’s brain child and he put the race together joining many of his favourite local trail runs. The full distance was 100k but runners were given the option of completing 50k as a relay team with a partner or, in fact, doing any distance participants wished. Nearly 50 took part with most tackling the full 62 miles. The base was at Offwell and it seemed that runners visited most of the villages in East Devon either sooner or later. Adam was the 3rd person to cross the line in a time of 13 hours 9 minutes having tackled this distance for the first time. The weather was as perfect as you could get and all arrangements went well with runners carrying a tracker usually used to locate boats so those back at base knew exactly where the runners were at all times; a very useful tool for a race of this distance. Feedback from runners was great thanking Alasdair for excellent organisation and also to Alasdair’s friends who he had roped in to help in many different ways. Many of the runners camped on Offwell Playing Fields making a weekend of it and found themselves very well fed with a variety of different foods provided.
On Sunday, 28th April, Harry Entwistle went with his Dad to take part in the Chardstock race for children. Harry had an incredible race coming 7th overall in 16 minutes 18 seconds being awarded ‘stand out performer of the race’. The race was won by Ben Price in 11:44.
On Sunday, 5th May, Stephen Boyes visited Newport, Wales to take part in the Newport Marathon. Stephen was delighted to finish in 3 hours 41 minutes which should be a good enough time to give him a guaranteed good for age time for next year’s London Marathon.
Fast Friday 10k, London Marathon & Exmouth Half Marathon
Two HRC members were in action at Good Friday’s Fast Friday 10k event. The course was two laps around Exeter Quayside and the hot weather made for some tough running, so much so, even some of the pacers didn't finish! First back for Honiton was Adam Rooke in a time of 43 minutes 18 seconds, followed by Jay Sweetman in 46.38. All finishers received a medal and a Creme Egg for their efforts.
Three HRC ladies took on the challenge of the London Marathon last Sunday. Although cold waiting in the start area, the race itself had ideal weather conditions. Judy Davey has taken part in this race several times before and was pleased to finish in 3 hours 41 minutes. Paula Ferris gained her place by winning the Club’s ballot place and she was raising money for the local The Baton charity. This was her first time at London and she loved the atmosphere finishing well under her target time of 4 hours crossing the line in 3 hours 52 minutes. It was also Olivia Higginson’s first London Marathon and she was running for the charity Mind which supports people with mental health problems. Olivia didn’t really have a target except to finish it with a smile on her face! She achieved this finishing in a time of just over 4 ½ hours. Well done to the ladies, London Marathon is no walk in the park!
On the same day some other HRC runners took part in the Exmouth Half Marathon which was described as multi terrain, starting on Exmouth Sea front. The first mile was flat but it quickly turned into an uphill slog for three miles before flattening out along the old railway line towards Budleigh Salterton. Here the runners continued along the seafront before climbing high onto the coast path for an undulating run back into Exmouth. Nick Silkstone had a superb run, finishing 6th overall in a time of 1.31. Howard Bidmead was next back for Honiton in 1.56. Rebecca Stevens added to her race portfolio and was happy with her finishing time of 2.09. Albeit described as a Multi terrain event this race was definitely more road.
Manchester Marathon & Kilmington Kanter
On Sunday, 7th April some Honiton Running Club members started off the spring marathon season with the Greater Manchester Marathon. First back for HRC was Steve and Michelle Selley in a time of 4 hours 15 minutes. Anna Dalzell was next back in 4:19 with Claire Rouse finishing in 4:32 and then came Vanessa Knowles in 4:38. Just one week later, Vanessa was tackling the Brighton Marathon finishing in 4:51.
A much shorter distance race and much closer to home attracted lots of HRC runners on Good Friday to take part in the 7 mile multi-terrain Kilmington Kanter. It was a gorgeous hot sunny day which makes a change as this race is often run in very cold conditions; perhaps one advantage of Easter being late this year. First back for HRC was Adam Hennessey coming 10th in 48:10. Alasdair Moffett followed in 19th place in 53:53. Tom Bornet came 21st in 54:24. First back for the HRC ladies was Paula Ferris who stormed around coming 3rd lady overall in 31st place in 57:29. Paula is tackling London Marathon in just over a week and the training is obviously paying off. Richard Harvey came 34th in 57:50. Howard Bidmead won his age category coming 41st in 59:48. Judy and Steve Davey raced each other to the line with Judy crossing the line first and winning her age category. Judy came 43rd in 1:00:26 and Steve was given 1 place and 1 second later. Their daughter Jo was suffering with a cold and came 47th in 1:01:56. There were several first time runners for this race from HRC and Sharon Wells had a great race coming 49th in 1:02:32. Other HRC runners: 63rd Luke Holway 1:08:13, 64th Rachel Hennessey 1:08:29, 65th Tim Wigram 1:08:38, 73rd Janice Newson 1:11:08, 78th Emma Davey 1:14:11 and 87th Kathy Layzell 1:25:24. There were 89 finishers and the race was won by Tom Merson in the amazing time of exactly 39 minutes which is a course record of over 3 minutes. HRC junior Piper Leisk took part in the 2 ½ mile Fun Run which starts with the main runners and goes up into Kilmington Woods before returning to the cricket field. Piper came 3rd girl, 18th overall in 21:40. There were 42 finishers. Upon their return, runners were treated to a seasonal warm buttered hot cross bun. Thanks for everyone who helped organise the race especially Luke Reed as the main man. Money raised went to Kilmington Primary School.
Honiton Hippo & Calf
Honiton Running Club held its Hippo and Calf runs last Sunday with the base at Honiton Primary School. It was a very cold day but dry which made the going underfoot pretty good.
The main Hippo race is just over 7 miles in length involving plenty of variety. Runners first run down the road to the entrance of Combe Woods before circling the woods and coming back on the road to Combe Raleigh. They then face the challenging St Cyres’ Hill running on road and through woods. Next it’s down towards Awliscombe to be taken off road and into the Land Rover Experience only to go straight back up the hill again. A quick run around the Land Rover Experience follows involving several muddy soakings and a couple of cold water dunkings. Runners didn’t have long to dry off before coming across two river crossings which took their breath away with the cold. Luckily help was on hand to pull runners out. The race was won by Tim Lenton in a time of 50 minutes 37 seconds. Second was Roger Easterbrook in 51:58 and 3rd David Garcia in 52:54. First lady was Lucy Macalister in 54:34, 2nd lady was Michelle Cowley in 1:01:09 and 3rd lady was Honiton Running Club’s Suzanne Spiller in 1:01:59. Many HRC members were involved in helping or marshalling but quite a few took part putting in some great performances and many for the first time. These included:
20th Wayne Trump 1:00:06, 33rd Ceri Oak 1:04:33 (category winner), 41st Vernon Gillard 1:05:42, 43rd Stephen Boyes 1:06:20, 72nd Luke Holway 1:15:24, 81st Linda Grady 1:17:05, 99th Ashleigh Ford-Cosens 1:22:11, 104th Daniella Monger 1:24:33, 105th Anna Dalzell, Steve & Michelle Selley (ran together) 1:24:39, 112th Andy Ashford 1:25:20, 117th Emma Davey 1:27:28, 131st Carol Turnham 1:30:19 and 173rd Michelle Hill 1:53:15. There were 192 finishers.
The Calf is open to youngsters of 9 years and over and is approximately 1 ¾ miles in length although younger children are allowed if they run with an adult. It follows the same route as the Hippo until coming out of Combe Woods when the Calf runners are sent back to base. This year it was decided that the river was too deep so they were directed back on the road. HRC’s own Alfie Gibbins won the race in 11 minutes 13 seconds with Finlay Downes coming 2nd in 11:20. Sam Eyre of AVR came 3rd in 11:22. The first girl back was Lauren Carr in 12:48, 2nd girl was HRC’s Piper Leisk in 13:09 and 3rd, also from HRC , was Maicey Bennett in 13:13. Jemima Daly came 14th in 13:25 winning her category.

Trepolpen Seythin 10k & Exe to Axe
On Sunday, 31st March, Sherrie Hair from Honiton Running Club took part in The Trepolpen (Tre=village, Pol=coast, Pen=hills) Seythin 10k which is a new race this year organised by East Cornwall Harriers. It is a multi-terrain race with some tough ascents and 'a sting in the tail' with the last section along the beach from Downderry to Seaton (Cornwall). There were 166 runners and the race was won by Nick Loewendahl from St Austell running club in 39:38. Sherrie had a fantastic run coming in as first lady (8th overall) in 44:55.
Last Sunday, 8 HRC runners took the shorter journey to Exmouth to take part in JP’s Exe to Axe race organised by Sidmouth Running Club. This race follows the coastal path from Exmouth to Seaton passing through Sandy Bay, Budleigh Salterton, Ladram Bay, Sidmouth, Weston Mouth, Branscombe and Beer before ending at the other end of the sea front in Seaton. This is a particularly tough race of 22 miles and there is a total climb of about 3800 ft. The running conditions underfoot were ideal as was the weather and if runners felt like looking, they were treated to some breathtaking views along the way. First back for HRC was Adam Hennessey who had a great run finishing 26th in 3 hours 19 minutes. Alun Gwernan-Jones was next back coming 74th in 3:49. Nick Silkstone had taken it easy for the first 15 miles running with a HRC group and he just missed the 4 hour mark finishing 92nd in 4:01. A group of 4 HRC runners came in next virtually crossing the line together having stuck with each other for the entire route. They were made up of Judy Davey, Steve Davey, Jo Davey and Richard Harvey. They finished 136-139 in about 4:22. The HRC line-up was completed by Shane Hudd who really struggled but finished 215th in 5:15. The race had joint winners of Robert Ellis and Simon Minting of Exmouth Harriers in 2:52 and there were 244 finishers.
Granite Way 20 Miler and Yeovil Half Marathon
On Sunday the 24th of March, Paula Ferris from Honiton Running Club participated in the 20 mile Granite Way Race in Okehampton organised by Exeter City Community Trust; a bright, dry day proving ideal conditions in preparation for the London marathon on the 28th of April. The route was flat with little inclines along the way at various points, an out and back loop completed twice, with excellent support along the way. The plan was to use the route as a pacing exercise to try and maintain a steady consistent run. Paula's aim for the Marathon is around the 4 hour mark, the goal therefore was 3 hours of running. Paula completed the 20 miles in 2 hours 51 mins, marginally quicker than planned but felt good and strong over the whole distance. Paula is raising money for the local charity "The Baton" if you would like to read Paula's story and donate to this amazing worthwhile cause visit https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/PaulaFerris
On the first day of British Summer Time, Sunday, 31st March, 9 HRClub members took part in the Yeovil Half Marathon. With an early start seeming even earlier with the clocks going forward, it was a little chilly before the off. However, as soon as runners got going it the conditions were ideal. The course is hilly for a road marathon so if personal best times were achieved they were well deserved. Jo Davey led the HRC runners home coming 172nd in 1 hour 37 minutes and 22 seconds and 5th in her category. She was followed by her mum Judy who came 294th in 1:43:04 and 3rd in her age group. It was a family affair as dad, Steve, followed just 58 seconds later coming 330th. Next was Howard Bidmead who came 390th, 4th in category in 1:46:12. Rachel Hennessey had a fantastic race coming 629th in 1:54:06 with a pb for over 7 years. Olivia Higginson followed coming 716th in 1:56:57 and then came Wendy Hawker who came 849th just missing the 2 hour mark by 6 seconds. This was Emma Davey’s first half marathon and she did very well to come 867th just 33 seconds behind Wendy. Finishing the HRC line-up was Pip Vanham who came 1070th in 2:10:48. There were 1618 finishers and the race was won by Stuart Holloway in 1:12.
Woolacombe Dunes Park Run and Bath 1/2 Marathon
Eight members from Honiton Running Club travelled to North Devon on Saturday, 16th March to test out the Woolacombe Dunes Park Run which has been given the title of the UK’s toughest Park Run. Whether you agree or not it is certainly one of the most stunning for scenery. Extremely blustery conditions greeted the 71 runners who were informed that 4/5 minutes should be added to normal average park run times.
The course started on the shingle coast path before a steep descent and a gully deep in sand took runners onto Woolacombe beach. The run along the beach was a mile in length before a steep sand dune had the runners clambering up into the dunes and following an undulating trail to the finish.
First Honiton runner back was Emilie Padmore who had a super run finishing 10th overall and first lady home in a time of 24m 29s for the 5k Run. She was followed by Howard Bidmead finishing 17th in 26.06 and was first Male O60. Steve Davey followed and was first Male O55 and finished in 22nd position in 26.42. Other Honiton runners were Roger Saunders who finished in 30th place in 27.54. Darren Roberts 32nd in 28.24. Rachel Hennessey 33rd in 28.52. Pip Vanham 54th in 33.51 and Kathy Layzell in 56th position in 35.26. The event was won by Clinton Winfield finishing in 21m31s.
The members then enjoyed a superb breakfast in the Woolacombe Bay Hotel arranged by Pip Vanham and vowed they would be back all having agreed that a fab morning had been had by all.
After running with just 70 runners at the wonderful windy Woolacombe parkrun Roger Saunders decided to run with over 12,000 runners a day later at the Bath Half Marathon - a different challenge. Surprisingly for Bath it is a virtually flat course of 2 loops along the river Avon and the weather was kind with sunshine and less wind than of late. Roger was running for Swallow a charity which helps people with learning disabilities and managed to raise over £300 for them. The winner was Chris Thompson (1:03:09) and first lady Kate Reed (1:12:44). Roger, who has been slowing down of late, was very pleased with his time of 1:48:24 in 2854 position. The event was well organised and would be good for those contemplating a first half marathon
Grizzly Runs
Honiton Running Club had a huge turnout for the infamous Grizzly and Cub races last Sunday, 10th March. The races are put on by Axe Valley Runners and attract literally thousands of runners to Seaton and even more spectators. There were 590 finishers and the race was won by Sidmouth Running Club’s Ben Chesters in 1:10.
The Grizzly and Grizzly Cub races formed part of the Grizzly Fest weekend and some HRC juniors took part in the Junior Grizzly held on Saturday, 9th March. The race was won by Jacob Bell in 15 minutes 55 seconds. Ben Matthews came 12th in 19:12, Maicey Bennet came 23rd in 21:53 and Skye Simmons came 25th in 22:08. There were 31 finishers. There was also a Junior Cub run which was won by Will Birchall of Mrs Ethelston’s School and there were 128 children taking part. A further 129 children took part in the fun run which was won by Exmouth Harriers’ Ellis Brown.
Thanks to Axe Valley Runners’ Grizzly Committee, the landowners, the marshals, sponsors and everyone else who was involved in any way in putting on this fabulous, well organised weekend.
Looe 10 miler.
Honiton Running Club had a sole representative at the Looe 10 miler on Saturday, 23rd February. This is an undulating run, and with 1600ft of total ascent, it is as advertised 'hilly and hellish'! The race is organised by Looe Pioneers Running Club; Sherrie Hair ran this in memory of the club’s founder Ian Slee who was a good family friend and running inspiration. There were 517 finishers, with Tony Brewer winning in a time of 1:01:13. Sherrie was 2nd lady, finishing in 1:17:19.
George (7yrs) and Samuel (5yrs) Hair took part in the 1 mile fun run. All funds were raised for Cornwall Air Ambulance.
U16 boy - Finlay Downes of HRC in 8 min 43 sec.
Team winners were:
U11 boys for West Hill - Sam Smart, Oscar Finch & Evan Perkins

Thanks to all who helped with Special thanks to Escot Park for allowing their grounds to be used again this year.

Other HRC runners: 6th Jacob Holland 12:19, 8th Ben Matthews 12:25, 9th Charlie Wheeler 12:32, 10th Ben Totten 12:48, 15th Jonathan Triner 13:30, 16th Max Spiller 13:45, 20th Amber McDermott 14:07, 23rd Ella Spiller 14:41, 25th Maddie Knight 15:34, 26th Skye Symons 15:54, 32nd Mason Peek 16:28 and 34th Emily Pepper 17:27. There were 37 finishers. The winning primary school team this year was Upottery.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the run and those who helped including marshals and cake makers and especially the land owners for allowing all those feet to trample their ground. Honiton’s next event is the Ottery 10k on 12th May. Visit www.honitonrc.com for more information.

U16 boy - Finlay Downes of HRC in 8 min 43 sec.
Team winners were:
